Marie Soulière
Meet Marie Soulière, Journal Manager and our Program Manager for Physical Sciences and Engineering. Marie’s from Québec with a PhD and research background in biochemistry.

Here she chooses her personal favorite paper from Frontiers in Chemistry in 2014: Novel TPP-riboswitch activators bypass metabolic enzyme dependency
Read the paper (OA): http://fron.tiers.in/go/0r6J9w

She writes:
Riboswitches are RNA elements almost exclusively found in bacteria, and that I (and many others!) see as the next best target for the development of new antibacterial drugs. In this article, the authors use a number of very elegant methods to confirm that a particular type of riboswitch, called TPP, could indeed be targeted by new thiamine derivatives. They evaluated the dependency of these compounds on some bacterial intracellular pathways, which is a critical point to determine whether some molecules could indeed be used to kill bacteria, without harming human cells!
